PORTLAND (WGME) -- Southern Maine is bracing for 5-10 inches of snow Friday through Saturday.

While it might not be welcomed by everyone, it certainly isn't unheard of to see a big storm this late in the year in New England.

Last year, 2.2 inches were recorded in Portland on April 26th. It was the latest snowfall recorded in Portland since 1993.

The winter of 2016 as a whole did not bring a lot of snow, but we were actually above average for snowfall in April, with 3.7 inches over the course of the month.

The average snowfall for the month of April in Portland is 2.8 inches.

According to the Nation Weather Service, the snowiest April was back in 1906 when 20.5 inches fell.

The April storm everyone talks about, though, came on April 6th-7th 1982. That storm brought 15.9 inches.

And just 10 years ago, back in 2007, 11.6 inches fell in Portland.

You can track the storm with our interactive radar and be sure to monitor all closings and delays.
