Thank-A-Vet: Chief Gunner's Mate Sidney Noel

This week we recognize World War II Navy veteran Sidney Noel. (Marcus Mitchell)

PORTLAND (WGME) -- It’s time to honor an American hero in this week's Thank-A-Vet segment.

This week we recognize World War II Navy veteran Sidney Noel.

This picture was sent to us by his great-grandson Marcus Mitchell.

He tells us Noel was a Chief Gunner's Mate on the USS Topeka in the 7th Pacific Fleet.

His ship attacked Saipan, and was also part of the first ships to bomb Tokyo.

Sadly, Noel passed away on June 30.

We're told he loved his wife Kay, and that they were married for almost 70 years.

From all of us here at CBS 13, thank you Chief Gunner Noel for defending our freedom.

To have us honor your American hero, send us their picture, tell us who they are, when they served, and why they are so important in your life.

Send that information to our WGME Facebook page.

Keep watching us here at 7 to see your American hero honored on CBS 13.
