CASCO (WGME) – A family found skeletal remains while cleaning out their late father's property in Casco over the weekend, and it's not clear who it is.

State police investigating after human remains found in Casco

State police responded to the home on Poland Spring Road after family members found the remains in an "outbuilding" on Saturday.

According to Maine State Police, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 3:30 p.m. from someone reporting they found skeletal remains at 196 Poland Springs Road.

The call was made by a family member who was cleaning out their father’s home after he died earlier this year. The remains were found in an outbuilding on the property. 

State police say the father who died was 82-year-old Douglas Scott. 

The remains are being examined by the chief medical examiner. Deputies spent the weekend investigating the circumstances around this discovery and are interviewing persons of interest along with witnesses.

Maine State Police say they don’t believe there is any threat to the public.
