Auburn sent out incorrect property tax bills
AUBURN (WGME) -- Some concern and confusion in Auburn after the city sent out incorrect property tax bills.
Shortly after they were mailed, staff members noticed inconsistencies in property values. It turns out; some were processed using last year's assessed values, 4,000 tax-payers were charged too much and 845, not enough.
The city is re-printing all 9,000 bills but in the meantime, some say it's unsettling, not sure what they really owe.
Connie Mercier, property owner, says: “It’s frightening, everything is so expensive, I have an empty apartment and stuff and I’ve had some who have lived here before and they owe me money for back rent and it’s scary.”
New bills should be mailed out to all Auburn property taxpayers next week.
The city is pushing back the due date to October first.
