Autopsy confirms Maine man shot to death by police
MEXICO, Maine (AP) -- Law enforcement officials say a Maine man was shot multiple times by police during an exchange of gunfire with officers.
The attorney general's office says an autopsy concluded that 52-year-old Steven R. Piirainen of South Paris died from gunshot wounds to the neck and chest. The wounds were not self-inflicted.
State police say Piirainen stole a truck before exchanging gunfire with a state trooper and a local officer outside a convenience store and gas station late Sunday in Mexico, Maine.
No officers were hurt. Trooper Paul Casey and Mexico reserve police officer Dean Benson were both placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice, during the investigation.
