Man found dead in stolen pick-up after standoff, shots fired, police say
MEXICO (WGME) - State Police say 52-year-old Steven Piirainen of South Paris is dead after stealing a pick-up and creating a standoff Sunday evening.
State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland says Piirainen stole a pick-up in Paris Sunday afternoon. Police caught up with him at the Circle K gas station on Main Street in Mexico.
McClausland says Piirainen fired at a state trooper and a Mexico Police officer. Police did fire back. The standoff lasted until about 11 p.m., when a state police tactical team confirmed Piirainen had died in the truck.
According to police, the two officers who fired at Piirainen were state trooper Paul Casey and Mexico reserve officer Dean Benson. The two officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay, as is standard in the aftermath of a police involved shooting.
Investigators were on scene through early Monday morning. Main Street is now back open to traffic.
