Man trying to locate missing State Theatre sign letters

PORTLAND (WGME) -- From trash, to treasure, a Maine man is trying to find two giant pieces of Portland history that were originally thrown away.

Sid Tripp says he bought the letters, S, T and A from a flea market. The vendor says he fished them out of the dumpster as the State Theatre underwent one of its renovations.

Tripp paid $10 each for the letter, before realizing they were historic pieces of the original marquee sign.

He's hoping to find whoever has the second T and E to make the iconic sign complete.

"They were in my basement for 15 years,” said Tripp. “I'm hoping that someone out there has them, can understand that it would be really cool to put them together and to also see a piece of Maine history and Portland history preserved."

Right now, the letters are hanging at Tripp's office at the Back Bay Tower on Cumberland Avenue.

If united, he hopes to have the letters hang in a museum or gallery for others to enjoy.
