A reminder this holiday, fireworks are illegal to set off

PORTLAND (WGME) -- City leaders want to remind you that it's still illegal to set off fireworks yourself.

The Portland City Council passed a local ordinance banning personal fireworks use.

That's thanks to a clause in the statewide law that made fireworks legal more than two years ago.

The Portland Fire department wants to make sure people get the message of how dangerous fireworks can be.

Tim Nangle, Portland Fire Department, says: I think that they believe that because it's a consumer product and it's legal to sell in Maine that they do have some kind of safety mechanisms in them and realistically they don't."

The Consumer Products Safety Commission says eight people died last year from head and chest trauma associated with fireworks injuries and 14% of the more than 11,000 people injured by fireworks were under the age of four.
