Maine's bear population eating well according to new survey
STATEWIDE (WGME) -- It appears the state's bear population is benefiting from a good supply of natural food resources.
The state's winter bear den survey from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife shows the average weight of one year old bears is about 46 pounds. Last year it was 32 pounds.
That means the bears have been eating good.
More available food also means bears entered their dens later. That resulted in more hunting opportunities for the state's bear hunters.
