Transient arrested after hiding under Brunswick bridge
BRUNSWICK (WGME) -- A transient is behind bars are climbing atop a bridge between Brunswick and Topsham late Friday night, hiding from police by going underneath the bridge and arrested for creating a standoff. Eric Wallace, 27, was one of two men Brunswick police climbed to the top of the Frank J. Wood Bridge. After midnight, police responded to the scene, and one of the two men climbed down and was released. Police said Wallace tried to hide by lying down on the top beam before climbing underneath the bridge. Rescue crews deployed to the Androscoggin River to keep Wallace in sight. A Brunswick officer and firefighter were deployed with harnesses to search for Wallace. Around 2:42 a.m., Wallace was found, and after talking to him for almost an hour Wallace agreed to climb out. He has been charged with criminal trespass and creating a police standoff. Wallace also had outstanding arrest warrants for failing to appear. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail.
