Portland gains a dozen new firefighters
PORTLAND (WGME) -- The city of Portland has a dozen new firefighters.
The graduation ceremony was Thursday morning for twelve the new recruits.
They were selected out of 80 candidates that passed the final exam, to go through rigorous "drill school training."
David Jackson, Assistant Fire Chief, says: They do 13 weeks of intense physical and mental training, which includes a tremendous amount of firefighter skills, hands on and classroom time, a lot of testing, certifications and at the end of that 13 weeks comes to this date to graduate where they'll actually be pinned and receive their badge."
Many of the new recruits will be starting their first shift on Sunday, with most of them going on the job sometime next week.
