Historic island offers unique educational experience
ISLE OF SHOALS (WGME)-A historic island off the coast of Maine offers the opportunity of a lifetime. Appledore Island is an academic paradise for marine biology students and a unique tourist attraction for history buffs.
The director of Shoals Marine Laboratory said the island is an immerse field experience.
The Marine laboratory takes up most of the 95 acres of the island and is part of a summer undergraduate program run by Cornell and UNH that lets students study the island's environment.
The laboratory is also working to restore the Celia Thaxter Garden. Thaxter was a writer and poet who lived on this island in the 1800s and wrote about the garden.
