Parking protest stickers show up on meters in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH (WGME) -- A parking protest of sorts is happening in Portsmouth. Stickers are popping up around town on parking meters with a very explicit word on it.

On Friday, a Portsmouth city employee noticed a sticker on one of the parking meters using an expletive. It reads, "(EXPLETIVE) Portsmouth Parking."

The stickers were taken down, but over the course of the weekend 20 more popped up on parking meters throughout Portsmouth.

We spoke to the city's parking director who says people complaining about parking is nothing new. He says they need about 300 more spots to meet the parking demand, but he doesn't know what's behind this criticism.

"I can't tell what the beef is," said Nelson. "Is it because you couldn't find a place to park? Do you think it costs too much? I don't know."

Police say whoever is putting up the stickers could be charged with criminal mischief.
