Emily Cain wins Democratic primary

AUGUSTA (AP) -- State Sen. Emily Cain has defeated colleague Troy Jackson to become the Democratic nominee for Maine's open 2nd Congressional District seat.

Cain, a University of Maine employee, will take on the winner of the hotly contested Republican primary in November. She was winning 71 percent to 29 percent Tuesday evening with 128 out of 422 precincts reporting in unofficial returns.

On the Republican side, former state Treasurer Bruce Poliquin and former Senate President Kevin Raye are facing off.

Jackson, a logger from Allagash, said throughout the campaign that he would be a voice for the working class in Washington. But Cain said Maine needs someone in Congress with experience working with Republicans to deliver results.

The seat is open because U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud (MEE'-shoh) is running for governor.
