Teacher saves student from choking
LEWISTON (WGME) -- A Lewiston teacher thought she'd celebrate the end of the school year by letting her students watch a movie and eat some snacks.
Brandi Munsey's third graders at Montello Elementary were enjoying their end of school activity, when Munsey says a student suddenly came up to her with his hands around his neck.
Munsey says the student couldn't talk and she knew right away he was choking.
While another student ran for the school nurse, Munsey began doing abdominal thrusts, formerly called the "Heimlich Maneuver."
It took about 15 tries, before the maneuver worked.
Munsey says the student ran for a drink of water, but was just fine after.
She says the whole thing lasted just a few minutes, but felt a lot longer.
Mrs. Munsey says she's very happy she learned the lifesaving technique through the Red Cross when she used to babysit.
