Scarborough town amend local leash ordinance

SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- Scarborough town councilors on Wednesday voted to amend an ordinance regulating when dogs are allowed on town  beaches, and when they must be kept on a leash.

The amendments hope to achieve a kind of compromise in an issue that came up after an unleashed dog killed a protected piping plover on Pine Point Beach last summer.

During peak plover season, all Scarborough beaches will have restricted access. From May 15th through Labor Day, off-leash activity will be allowed from sunrise to 9am. From 9am-5pm, dogs will not be allowed on the beach at all. And from 5pm to sunset, dogs must be on a leash.
