Police charge son with murder of father in Richmond
RICHMOND (WGME) -- State Police have charged Leroy Smith III with the murder of his father in Richmond.
State police say the medical examiner's office determined Leroy Smith Jr. died of multiple sharp force injuries at his Gardiner apartment. His body was then moved to Richmond.
Police say they found the body of Leroy Smith II off Lincoln Road around 6 a.m. The discovery came after police arrested his son, Leroy Smith III, in Westbrook early Monday morning on unrelated charges.
Police say both men lived in the same apartment at 16 Cannard Street in Gardiner.
State Police spent Monday night searching the apartment for evidence. The front door and a nearby dumpster were both covered in yellow police tape.
Massachusetts police say the 24-year-old man was wanted for violating a harassment order requested by his landlord.
Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon said the younger Smith has been investigated by the FBI for threats made to the U.S. president. He was living in Westborough, Massachusetts, when the harassment order was filed in October. A warrant was issued in December. Gordon said Smith "thought he was God."
