Winter takes toll on local golf courses
PORTLAND (WGME) -- We're well into spring but the tough winter is still taking a toll on local golf courses. The greens, are brown.
To fix the damage, courses are spending more money than they're bringing in.
It's called winter kill, the freezing and thawing just ruins the grass on the greens and some are saying this year, the winter kill is worse than ever before.
The general manager at Riverside Golf Course says revenue is low, and expenses are high, and that's making for a tough start to the season.
Courses are opening later this season than last, but at least they're open here in southern Maine.
Up north, the greens are still covered with snow and it could be several weeks before anyone can tee off up there.
