Officer involved in Rumford shooting
RUMFORD (WGME) -- A woman is in stable condition after Rumford's police chief tells CBS 13 News officers were forced to shoot her when she finally confronted them Tuesday night.
Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter says they got the call shortly before 5 p.m. that a woman at 77 Maine Ave was suicidal and trying to overdose. Police say they arrived on scene were able to locate that woman, but when she came out of the building she was armed.
"The female approach the officers with the knife," Chief Carter said. "They issued commands for her to drop the knife, she did not. It comes down to them protecting themselves and they had to fire at the individual."
Chief Carter said they'll be working with the officers to get them through the ordeal and the attorney general's office is leading the investigation, which is standard protocol for this type of investigation.
