Century old New Sharon bridge demolished
NEW SHARON (WGME) -- A western Maine bridge nearly a century old is demolished, but taking it down wasn't easy.
The Maine DOT destroyed the bridge in New Sharon because it was in danger of collapsing.
Ironically, tearing it down was harder than the DOT thought. The first set of explosives did nothing.
Then the DOT found steel beams they weren't aware of and an excavator finished the job.
The bridge was built in 1916 and has been closed since the 90s.
