Maine teen accused of stealing diamond ring for his girlfriend

FRYEBURG (WGME) -- An 18-year-old man stands accused of stealing a $25,000 diamond ring from a home in New Hampshire and giving it to his then-girlfriend, whose father thought the ring was stolen after having it appraised and alerted police. Rod Desroche Jr. of Denmark was arrested earlier this week on a charge of unworn falsification for lying to Fryeburg police in a previous interview about the ring police say he admitted to taking from a Barlett, NH home. Working with Bartlett police, Fryeburg Sgt. Joshua Potvin said they were able to confirm the theft. Desroche admitted he stole the ring when he was conducting work for the homeowner. The ring was given to a 16-year-old Baldwin girl as a promise ring last year. Desroche had told police last month he found the ring in a parking lot. Potvin said the girl's father had the ring appraised after the couple broke up and suspected it may have been stolen when he learned the ring's value. Desroche will appear in Bridgton District Court in April, and further charges may be pending in New Hampshire.
