Doctors stress importance of ski helmets

CARRABASSETT VALLEY (WGME) -- The death of a young man skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain Tuesday is highlighting the importance of ski helmets. Stephen Colvin, 21, died when he fell on the steep Hayburner Trail and slid into the woods.

Investigators say he was not wearing a helmet and point to head trauma as a cause of death. Doctors say a helmet can make all the difference, not just in skiing, but all contact sports. Head injuries can cause lifelong problems.

It really can. It can affect sleep. It can affect your mood. It can affect your cognitive behavior. It doesnt have to be a physical manifestation, said Dr. Amber Hayes.

Colvin was on the Black Diamond Trail, which is one of the most difficult. He was a student at Husson University.
