Red Claws vs 87'ers


Portland, ME – February 2, 2017 - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, fell to the Delaware 87ers 109-90 at the Portland Expo. With the loss tonight Maine fell to (19-12) on the season, while Delaware who had lost three in a row, improved to (16-13) while remaining two games behind Maine in 2nd place in the Atlantic Division.

In the first quarter, Maine didn’t get on the board until 9:21 left in the quarter, when Abdel Nader connected on one free throw making the score at the time 2-1 Delaware. With 6:20 left in the 1st, Jalen Jones nailed a corner three to make the score 6-6. Russ Smith finished a layup and was fouled with 2:46 left in the quarter, converted the free throw to give the 87ers a 20-12 lead. Delaware finished the quarter on a 8-7 run to lead Maine 28-19 heading into the 2nd.

In the 2nd Maine got going offensively on a three pointer by Ryan Kelly to make it 32-27 in favor of the 87ers. With 5:52 left in the first half Jalen Jones made a layup to make it 40-34 Delaware. Jalen Jones converted a pair of free throws to cut the 87ers lead down to 4, 45-41 just over three minutes left in the half. Delaware closed the half out on an 8-3 run to head to the locker rooms up 53-44. Ryan Kelly led Maine off the bench with 15 points, while Devondrick Walker led the 87ers with 12 points.

In the 3rd quarter Dionte Christmas came right out and scored a layup to give Delaware their largest lead of the night, 55-44. With 7:16 left in the 3rd Scott Morrison called a full timeout after Dionte Christmas made a layup to extend the lead to 14, 65-51, Delaware’s largest lead of the night. With 2:17 left in the 3rd quarter, Jalen Jones converted a layup and one, while Maine still trailed Delaware big, 78-59. The 87ers continued to stay hot offensively in the quarter while Maine continued its struggles. Delaware led 83-65 going into the final quarter.

In the 4th Maine continued to struggle offensively, while Delaware made a few quick buckets on a three from Dionte Christmas and a pair of two pointers from Shawn Long to lead Maine 90-67. With 5:02 Shawn Long finished a tough shot under the rim to extend the Delaware lead to 100-80. With 1:36 left in the game, Eugene Burroughs called a full time after a slam dunk from Asauhn Dixon-Tatum courtesy of newcomer Josh Hagins, Delaware led Maine 107-89. Delaware led this on the whole time, defeating the Maine Red Claws 109-90.

Maine finished the game 28/76 (36.8%) from the field while going 21/26 (80.8%) from the line. Maine struggled through all quarters offensively, also turning the ball over 18 (21 pts) times. Maine’s top scorers where Jalen Jones who had a game high 28 points on 9/16 from the floor, and 7/8 from the line. Ryan Kelly finished with 27 points on 9/15 from the floor and 6/8 from the line.

Delaware was 45/97 (46.4%) from the floor tonight and 9/16 (56.3%) from the line. Delaware had 10 (5 pts) turnovers on the night. Leading the 87ers in scoring was Shawn Long who finished with
