New Soccer Field opens
(Yarmouth, ME) The Sagamore Village Boys & Girls Club of Portland will soon have a new soccer field to play on thanks to the generosity and the hard work of a community-based girls’ soccer team in Yarmouth.
The Yarmouth Colts town travel team members spent two years raising money, initially with the goal of taking a team-building trip together last summer. But along the way, the young athletes had a change of heart, deciding instead to donate their money and time to causes within the community that are important to them.
In 2016 the team...
? donated $500 to the Gray New-Gloucester Backpack Program,
? spent 80 hours helping to clear a trail in Carrabassett Valley,
? devoted 92 hours of their time volunteering with the Special Olympics of Maine,
? invested additional money, time, and goods to various charities, food banks, and shelters throughout the greater Portland area.
Using soccer to connect people, skills and resources in the community, the team embarked last spring on an ambitious project - volunteering with the Sagamore Village Boys & Girls Club in Portland. Several of the players participated in the club’s after-school program, where they helped out with homework assignments and led some of the club’s recreational activities. The girls noticed that the kids at the club loved to play soccer, but did not have easy access to a playing field. After meeting as a team, the girls decided that they could fix this by allocating the rest of their money to building a soccer field that could be enjoyed both by club participants and the surrounding community.
