(Portland) After 43 years of dedicated service to Cheverus Gary Hoyt, Director of Athletics and Activities, has announced his intention to retire at the end of August. Gary will assist with the selection and transition of a new Athletic Director and continue to pursue his passion for working with our coaches and student athletes as a member of our Athletic department.

Under his leadership, our program has grown to include 29 teams, won 102 state championships and 84 SMAA championships in 21 different sports and various student activities, such as the math and chess teams, and has sent countless students off to continue their athletic careers in NCAA Division I – III sports.

For his contributions to Cheverus athletes and coaches as well as to the high school athletics community of Maine, Gary was named the MIAAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2012.

In addition to being inducted into the Cheverus Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006, Gary has been recognized both locally and nationally with a NFHS Citation in 2009, the Martin E.
