Charge bolt past Red Claws


Portland, ME – March 8, 2018 – The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, had a halftime lead but couldn’t keep it, falling to the Canton Charge on a snowy night at the Portland Expo, 112-103.

Maine (17-27) was led by Trey Davis with 25 points off the bench, Devin Williams recorded another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Daniel Dixon added 15 points, Kadeem Allen with 12 points and 7 assists, Anthony Bennett with 11 points and 11 boards, and Vitto Brown with 10 points.

Canton (19-25) was led by JaCorey Williams with a career high 29 points and 11 rebounds, Grant Jerrett added 26 points and 9 boards, and Scoochie Smith added 17 points in the win.

Bennett opened the scoring for Maine with a three ball in the opening minute. Dixon drained a pair of three’s to give the Claws a 9-7 lead. Off a rebound, Davis fed Bennett for the hoop plus the foul, putting Maine up 3. JaCorey Williams paced the Charge with 8 points early, but Maine continued to drop it in from the outside, with Drew Barham and Vitto Brown knocking in treys. Maine shot 6-13 from downtown in the 1st quarter, taking a 30-27 lead after 1.

In the 2nd, Kevin Olekaibe dropped in back-to-back three’s to put Canton up 3. Daniel Dingle dropped in a three to put Maine up 3. Dingle buried another from deep to put Maine up 46-41. Canton went on an 8-0 run to take the lead, but Barham’s lay-in put the Claws back up 50-49. Williams hit a tough floater late in the quarter, and the Red Claws took a 56-55 lead at halftime. Maine shot 46.5% (20-43) in the first half, including 8-23 from downtown (34.8%). Canton shot 44.7% (21-47) from the floor, and 28.6% (6-21) from three-point range.

Williams opened the 2nd half with a dunk. JaCorey Williams continued his strong game with a three-point play to put the Charge up 66-63. Scoochie Smith buried a three as Canton extended to a 7 point lead. Davis scored back-to-back three’s to get Maine within 3. Davis continued to lead the Red Claws offensively in the 3rd, but JaCorey Williams’ tough three-point play and even tougher alley-oop dunk gave him 25 points in the game and gave Canton an 88-78 lead after 3.

In the 4th, Smith and the Charge extended the lead to 11. Dixon stopped the run with a corner three to make it 93-85. Former Red Claw Marcus Thornton scored back-to-back buckets to give the Charge a 98-87 lead. Williams secured a double-double with his offensive board and putback lay-up. Grant Jerrett continued his strong game with a 15-foot floater to put Canton up 106-90. Davis and Bennett led Maine on a 9-2 run to cut it to 9 points, but the Red Claws ran out of time.

The Red Claws return to action tomorrow night at Erie. Maine’s next home game is next Thursday, March 15 against Wisconsin.
