Infertility is a medical diagnosis, and more common than you may realize. According to the CDC, 1 in 8 couple will have trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. There are a lot of misconceptions about infertility and it helps to know the difference between myth and fact when it comes to trying to have a baby.

Myth: If you're having trouble conceiving, your only choice is IVF.

Fact: It may come as a surprise, but 85-90% of infertility cases are treated with conventional therapies such as drug treatment or surgical repair of reproductive organs. At Central Maine Fertility Center, only about 4% of infertility patients end up needing IVF.

Myth: I can't afford fertility treatments.

Fact: Not every infertility treatment is expensive. Costs of fertility treatments vary, and many insurers offer coverage for various stages of treatment. Central Maine Fertility Center prides itself on offering the most sophisticated and effective care, working with patients on an individual basis to overcome stressful financial barriers.

Dr. Michael Drouin and his team consider themselves advisors, leaving the choice and control in each patient's hands. They will often recommend a variety of fertility treatment options from which the patient may choose. And their goal is always to resolve the issue within 6 months through successful conception or a determination of what the appropriate next steps should be. A safe, effective, and efficient process is of the utmost importance at Central Maine Fertility Center, saving patients time and making treatments more affordable.

Myth: Infertility is an issue that only affects women.

Fact: It is as important for men to be evaluated as it is for women when couples are facing fertility issues. Approximately one-third of infertility is attributed to the female partner, one-third attributed to the male partner and one-third is caused by a combination of problems in both partners or, is unexplained.
