Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce says he expects 19-year-old Chynna Blaney will be charged with distracted driving because she may have been working a GPS when she ran a stop sign along Ledge Hill Road and drove into the path of a pick-up on North Raymond Road.
The sheriff's office says Blaney's 6-month-old son was thrown from the vehicle and his car seat, but landed in soft snow and likely suffered less-severe injuries because of the snow.
The occupants of the pick-up were not hurt. Blaney was treated and released from a hospital and she and her son are expected to recover.
Sheriff Joyce says the baby was strapped into the car seat, but slipped out upon impact. He says he called the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety to see if there was a design flaw in the child seat or if it was a malfunction with the seat belt mechanism in the older-model Toyota Blaney was driving.
The sheriff's office is still investigating.
