The fire started on Villa Road around 10:15 Tuesday morning, but fire crews spent much of the day here, working to put out the fire, and then working to determine a cause.
Smoke filled the skies above Westbrook. The smoke could be seen for miles, as fire destroyed one condo unit and damaged another. Neighbors spotted the flames and called for help. Neighbors watched and worried about the fire spreading even more, but firefighters worked fast to keep it under control.
A man and his children are renting the unit. No one was home when the fire started, so friends had to call the father to tell him the heartbreaking news. The tenant arrived to find his home destroyed. He took a moment, to take it all in.
Everyone here is thankful no one was seriously hurt. Rescue crews did take a firefighter to Maine Medical Center for an injured ankle, but he is expected to be ok.
