The senator is extremely busy, wrapping up a more than three decade career down here on Capitol Hill, her offices are overflowing right now with cards and well wishes from people-but also boxes and packing tape.
When asked to clear up a persistent rumor that she was offered a top post in President Obama's cabinet in 2009, shortly after the president took office, when there was talk he wanted a republican in his cabinet, for the first time, Senator Snowe confirmed that offer actually happened.
She wouldn't confirm exactly what the offer was… whether commerce secretary or head of the small business administration or something else… but she confirms it was cabinet level…so an interesting side note to history.
She received high praise Tuesday from the director of national intelligence, James Clapper. He presented Senator Snowe with the highest award given by the intelligence community to someone serving outside their agencies. Clapper, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Air Force, says Senator Snowe was sometimes a formidable foe - but always respectful and appreciative of the intelligence community - and constantly working toward solutions to national security issues.
For her part, Senator Snowe says she was extremely honored that director Clapper took the time Tuesday to present the award personally.
