Investigators have arrested a 37-year-old McAllen man accused of having three wives.

A state trooper arrested Oscar Gonzalez Correa, 37, of McAllen on Tuesday, according to information provided by Assistant Police Chief Oscar Trevino, a spokesman for the Edinburg Police Department.

The bigamy investigation started on June 28, 2016, when a woman named Lucia filed a report with the Edinburg Police Department.

Lucia said she married Correa on July 17, 2004, in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, according to information she provided to the police department. After they moved to the United States, he left her.

When Lucia went to the Hidalgo County Courthouse in December 2015 to file for divorce, she discovered Correa had married another woman, Trevino said. Lucia also discovered that Correa had married another woman in Nuevo Leon in 1996 — four years before they were married.

"So he had three wives," Trevino said.

Investigators reviewed the complaint and secured a warrant for Correa's arrest, Trevino said. The investigation also determined Correa isn't legally present in the United States.

A state trooper arrested Correa on Tuesday during a traffic stop and turned him over to Edinburg.

Correa is charged with bigamy, a third-degree felony.

Investigators booked Correa at the Hidalgo County jail at 7:31 p.m. Tuesday, according to Sheriff's Office records. Jailers released Correa at 5:37 a.m. Wednesday.

Court records don't list an attorney for Correa, who couldn't be reached for comment.
