STATEWIDE (WGME) -- Forget dogs, cats and hamsters, you can now have a hedgehog as a pet in Maine.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife added the small mammal, which resembles a porcupine, to the unrestricted animal list, paving the way to be able to become a pet in the state.

This now means licenses are no longer required for ownership.

The idea was brought to Senator Eric Brakey by a 6th grader from Mechanic Falls back in February who wanted to have a hedgehog as a pet without having to jump through lots of hoops and obtain multiple licenses.
