Westbrook woman fighting for her life after crash
WINDHAM (WGME) -- A Westbrook woman is fighting for her life after a car crashed head-on into a tree in Windham.
It happened along River Road, an area the DOT says is prone to accidents.
Windham police say Thursday evening, around rush hour, a car carrying three passengers veered right off of River Road, slamming right into a tree, sending all three passengers to the hospital.
Police say the driver, 25-year-old Mona Dawood of Westbrook, and 35-year-old Bassam Majeed of Westbrook were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
23-year-old Maha Dawood of Westbrook, Mona's sister, and Bassam's wife, who was also passenger, is in critical condition. Neighbors say they'll be praying for them.
This road is no stranger to crashes, Windham police say from January 2017 to January 2018 there've been 68 crashes along River Road.
Last night's marks the 19th this year.
DOT officials have a plan to fix it.
"It’s a rough road, we met with the town about the road improvements we're going to be doing, we really want to get out there and make this a much smoother and safer road for everybody," Spokesperson Ted Talbot said.
Construction on the northern end of River Road is complete. Next, DOT officials will be doing the same for the southern end next year.
Officials say many factors can cause a car accident. The cause of Thursday night's is still unknown.
Police say at this time they don’t believe speed or alcohol were a factor in this crash. They say they’re waiting to speak to the driver before closing their investigation.
