Water main break closes busy street in Portland, residents under boil water order
PORTLAND (WGME) -- A major water main break in Portland will close a busy street until Friday night and has prompted a boil water order for parts of the city.
Around 8 p.m. Thursday night, police and Portland Water District crews responded to Preble Street after several calls for a massive amount of water coming up from the pavement and flowing toward Marginal Way.
The water main break led to several areas getting blocked as crews turned off the water and tried to fix the break.
One witness coming to work at a Preble Street business said it look like the floodgates opened.
The boil water order was issued after 11 p.m. Thursday night by the Portland Water District for a portion of Munjoy Hill northeast of Sheridan Street. People are urged to boil water for one minute before drinking water, brushing teeth, washing food or other activities involving the consumption of water.
Just before midnight, the water district said Preble Street will remain closed for repairs until at least 8 p.m. on Friday.
