FREEPORT (WGME) – A runner who helped the guy he was trying to beat cross the finish line is feeling the love.

The honorary Beach to Beacon trophy was awarded to Rob Gomez Thursday afternoon at Thomas Moser Furniture in Freeport. The award itself is a beautiful wooden box for the athletes to keep all their medals in. Usually, the winners are the only ones to receive this award, but this year's race was different.

With less than 100 yards to go, Jesse Orach was in position to win the race for a 2nd time, but his body started to break down. He says that it may have been heat stroke. Either way, he fell to the ground and was struggling to get up.

Then he felt Rob Gomez lift him and tell him, “You're going to finish this race.” Rob carried him to the finish line.

Thursday, Rob announced that Jesse insisted they split the first place prize money and also donate a portion of it to this year's Beach to Beacon charity.
