Teens told to pay before eating at Auburn IHOP

AUBURN (WGME) -- The manager of the IHOP in Auburn has issued a public apology after reports that one of the servers asked a group of black teenagers to pay up front for their meal, according to the Sun Journal.

Manager Melvin Escobar said he has spoken with the server and that such an incident will never happen again, according to the Sun Journal.

He says he does not believe the server's actions were racially motivated and adds the restaurant has recently had some problems with young patrons walking out without paying for their meals.

“We don’t discriminate (against) people for what they are or who they are,” Escobar told the Sun Journal.

The manager says it came to his attention after a man from Monmouth posted about it on Facebook.

The post has been shared by more than 2,100 people. It quickly made its way to Escobar, who had not been in the restaurant when the incident took place, according to the Sun Journal.

Escobar issued a public apology on his restaurant’s Facebook page.

“A meeting has taken place with all of our staff members. Everyone has been made aware of these inexcusable actions and reminded how we handle matters correctly in the future,” the post read.

According to IHOP, the Auburn store is in the process of reaching out to the teenagers involved in the incident to apologize directly.

The IHOP in Auburn has seen patrons walk out on their bill four times in the past three months, according to the Sun Journal. Although the restaurant does not make servers pay for unpaid meals, Escobar said servers get anxious when walkouts happen.
