WHITEFIELD (WGME) – A driver may be facing charges for slamming their vehicle into a centuries-old cemetery in Whitefield.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, a crash that sent an SUV onto its side and took down headstones and fencing at Saint Denis' Cemetery.

The headstones were damaged in the single-car crash last Tuesday.

According to police, the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the end of Cooper Road and Route 126.

Police say the driver then lost control of their SUV and crashed in the cemetery.

Photos from the accident show damage to the fencing and the centuries-old headstones.

Police say that the driver may face charges in the crash, and the cemetery may face a significant amount of needed repairs.

The sheriff’s office says the driver was taken to the hospital following the crash but wasn’t injured.

Police with the crash still under investigation charges haven't been filed against the driver. That may change in the future.
