Storm forces Gardiner basketball teams to play elsewhere
GARDINER (WGME) – After the Halloween wind storm damaged the Gardiner Area High School gym, school leaders are moving the basketball games elsewhere this winter.
The Halloween wind storm ripped a hole in the Gardiner Area High School gym, and after rainfall hit its hardwood in the last few weeks, officials say the court is unusable for the upcoming basketball season.
A ripped roof leads to warped wood.
School officials say the court is probably done for, but the hole in the roof has now been covered up.
School leaders also say that the rest of the building is structurally sound
Beyond the mess on the court, school leaders had a mess in solving the schedule problem.
They've now scheduled some games at the Augusta Civic Center, and have asked fellow school districts to play doubleheaders, and allow Gardiner teams play in their court during off nights, as the community salvages the seasons of six basketball teams in the area.
School leaders say the insurance company and contractors still need to come in to the high school and come up with a timeline.
