Hiram woman dies in Brownfield crash
BROWNFIELD (WGME) – One person is dead and two injured after what police described as a near head-on collision on Route 113 in Brownfield Friday afternoon
Gail Sumber, 80, of Hiram, the passenger in a car driven by James Biggs, 70, also of Hiram, died. Biggs and Melissa Lavin, 40, of Bangor, the driver of the second car involved in the crash, are in stable condition at a hospital.
The Oxford County Sheriff's Office released the victims' names Saturday afternoon, but no cause for the accident has been determined. Police did interview a witness and plan to do more reconstruction of the accident as part of their investigation.
Everyone involved in the accident were wearing their seat belts, police said.
The crash happened just after 2 p.m. Friday and shut down Route 113 for four hours.
Video from the scene shows two vehicles involved in the accident; however authorities haven't confirmed that number.
A black jeep was flipped upside down on one side of Route 113. Another vehicle's front was mangled and off to the side of the road.
Authorities have not said how or when the accident happened, but it stopped traffic on both lanes until just before 6 Friday night.
Video shows that along with Oxford County Sheriff deputies, Brownfield volunteer firefighters assisted at the crash site.
