Lightning strike sparks fire in Saco, fire officials say
SACO (WGME) -- A lightning strike on Cumberland Avenue in Saco caused residents to deal with burned basements, tethered transformers. and damaged telephone poles.
Fire officials say three telephone poles were damaged, causing a street-wide power outage.
CMP crews spent more than five hours working on repairs.
Saco fire officials say lightning is the likely cause.
"There’s nothing jumping out at us that tells us it could be anything other [than a lightning strike],” Deputy Chief Robert Martin, Saco Fire Department, said.
"I was looking at my property and found scattered bits of our telephone pole all over the yard,” Lance Pelletier, Cumberland Avenue resident, said.
Despite the damage, no one was hurt.
