Police: Relationship between substitute teacher and student began online
WALDOBORO (WGME) -- A substitute teacher on the Midcoast is accused of exchanging sexually explicit photographs with a 15-year-old boy.
Police say it started as an online relationship between a 53-year-old man and a teenage boy.
Police say the two had exchanged sexually explicit photos when both realized they were at the same school.
Students at Medomak High School know William 'Bill' Bourget as their substitute teacher, but on a dating website for gay men, police say Bourget went by the name 'Large and in Charge.'
Police say a 15-year-old at Medomak had also signed up on the dating site when he received a message from that user name in Edgecomb.
According to the affidavit, the student received a sexually explicit photo from the user and the student later sent a sexually explicit photo to him.
The student also told police he initially lied and told the man he was 18, but according to the affidavit, when the student realized the man he'd exchanged photos with was a substitute teacher, he approached Bourget and told him his real age.
When questioned, police say Bourget denied knowing the boy was 15.
Investigators accuse Bourget of sending two more sexually explicit pictures to the teen even after learning he was 15.
"Through the contact of their teacher-student relationship, he realized how old he was," Lt. Mike Murphy said. "He knew this relationship was wrong, yet he pursued it and told him to keep quiet."
The judge set bail at $2,500.
If convicted, he faces a maximum ten year prison sentence.
Lt. Murphy says Bourget has no criminal record.
So nothing would have showed up on a criminal background check for the school.
