Pipe bursts at Waterville library, hundreds of books destroyed
WATERVILLE (WGME) – Waterville's public library remains closed after a pipe burst over the weekend, sending water through the building.
The copper water pipe broke in the staff offices, sending water through the library's lobby and into the children's section.
Library employees came across the flooding early Saturday morning.
They say one of the water pipes froze and burst, leaving parts of the library under two inches of water.
The Waterville Fire Department helped pump the water out.
Monday, library workers were still drying books and assessing the damage.
They estimate about 1,500 books got wet and 3 computers and a photocopier were destroyed.
The library estimates about 300-400 books are destroyed.
They are hoping to at least partially open to the public Tuesday.
