OXFORD (WGME) – One person is dead and another is seriously hurt after their car ran off Route 121 and crashed into a telephone pole.

Crews continue to repair a telephone pole that was snapped in half Thursday night after an accident on Route 121 in Oxford that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man and severely injured another.

Police say the crash happened just after 10 p.m. as the car was heading towards Mechanic Falls.

Investigators say 26-year-old Cedric Palmer Jr. lost control of his Honda Accord coming around a curve, hitting a telephone pole and flipping the car.

Palmer was pronounced dead at the scene, but his passenger Eric Knapik was also pinned inside the truck, but was able to be rescued.

He's currently in critical condition at Central Maine Medical Center with broken ribs and a broken back.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation but Oxford police say speed is likely a factor.

A GoFundMe has been started to help the family of Cedric Palmer Jr. with funeral expenses.
