CAPE ELIZABETH (WGME) -- Officials say three people are okay after their boat flipped over out at sea Wednesday.

First responders say a man and two teens were in a small boat about a quarter of a mile off Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth when a wave swamped the boat and dumped all three into the ocean.

They were all wearing life jackets and one of the teens called for help using a cell phone she kept in a plastic bag.

“If it wasn’t for that, it would’ve ended differently,” Lt. Josh Dellaquila, Cape Elizabeth Fire Department said.

The three people were only in the water about 15 minutes because they were able to call for help, according to Dellauqila.

He says it’s a good reminder to always keep your phone in a plastic bag when out on the water as well as to wear a life jacket.
