Officials investigate death of Westbrook man in police custody
PORTLAND (WGME) -- A Westbrook man has died in police custody, and now investigators are trying to figure out what happened.
An autopsy was performed on 34-year-old Adam Barnes Friday morning, but the Medical Examiner’s Office says it needs more time to run tests.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says Barnes' death doesn't appear suspicious.
Officials say Thursday afternoon they got a call of a man under the influence in public.
Police say Barnes led them on a short chase before crashing his car.
He was arrested and charged with drug trafficking and other charges.
Barnes was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Cumberland County Jail.
Officials say they followed protocol.
The Portland Police Department is investigating the death along with the Attorney General’s Office. Officials are calling this an unfortunate tragedy.
