NATIONWIDE (WGME) - A new phone scam is targeting veterans in a unique way.

The Department of Veterans Affairs say the new scam is trying to steal veterans' personal information

Imposters are trying to imitate the Veterans Choice Program phone line.

The number is very close to the real number.

Maine's congressional delegation says to take extra care when calling the Veterans Choice Program.

"It is critical that people throughout the community are aware of these malicious attempts to steal personal information and money from our nation’s veterans, and we encourage Maine people to share this information so that no veterans fall victim to this despicable trap," said Senators Collins and King and Representatives Pingree and Poliquin in a joint statement

They say you'll know you've reached the wrong number when the phone line offers a $100 rebate.

The correct number is 1-866-606-8198.

Veterans who believe they have been scammed can report it to the Senate Aging Committee’s Fraud Hotline at 1-855-303-9470.
