New bill would allow guns on college campuses
PORTLAND (WGME) -- There's a new bill at the State House to allow guns on college campuses.
This bill was created in order to make college campuses safer, but there's already debate on whether this would in fact make for a safer environment, or fuel more violence.
It’s called An Act to Enhance Safety on College and University Campuses by Allowing Firearms to be Carried on the Campuses of Public Colleges and Universities.
What it would do is allow people with conceal carry permit to carry their guns on campus grounds, however, there are some exclusions.
Concealed weapons are not allowed in a dormitory or residence hall. They are also not allowed in an entertainment facility, like an arena, stadium or amphitheater, any venue with at least 1,000 people owned and operated by the board of trustees of the university.
CBS 13 spoke with students Wednesday, who say a bill like this would create more safety, but the University of Southern Maine has a strict no weapons policy and they say they plan to stand by that.
This bill is still in the beginning stages.
Next it will be assigned to a committee to determine how to move forward.
