Marchers protest excessive spending at the Pentagon
PORTLAND (WGME) -- Marchers in Portland protested excessive spending at the Pentagon Tuesday.
Activists from Peace Action Maine and other groups gathered at Monument Square.
They say President Donald Trump has proposed a $54 billion increase to the military. They say that money should go to education, healthcare and programs like social security.
"We're speaking out on the imbalance of the budget. That most of our taxes are really paying for war and killing. And the whole safety net is being whipped out from under everybody to pay for this and we do not support that kind of a budget,” Ginny Schneider, Maine War Tax Resistance Resource Center, said.
Schneider says people are literally dying because of cuts in healthcare, food programs and other kinds of social programs.
President Trump defended military spending, saying it's a matter of national security.
