Man who attacked, raped elderly woman sentenced to 27 years

Mark Halle (WGME)

AUGUSTA (WGME) -- A Maine man who attacked and brutally raped and elderly woman in Waterville will spend the next 27 years in prison with 10 years of supervision after his release.

The victim says she forgives her attacker.

Linda Alderson spoke strongly before a judge in court Monday. She says she considers herself a survivor and not a victim and that she has forgiven 33-year-old Mark Halle, but will not forget what he did to her.

“What he did to me did not define me. I am the same person and always remain the same person,” Alderson said.

Alderson says it's her faith and family that got her through what she calls her encounter with what a judge called "sexual torture."

Prosecutors say Halle broke into her home in the middle of the night, raping and attacking her.

Alderson says she had met him just two days before when he stopped by her Waterville home and asked if she needed her deck shoveled off.

“I never did see his face, but I had a gut feeling and when the detectives came I said, ‘I don't want to point fingers, but I have a gut feeling you're going to find him next door,’” Alderson said.

Halle apologized for what he did on Monday.

“I'm so sorry for what I’ve done. That's not the person I am. Please ask for a little bit of mercy,” Halle said.

Alderson says she's happy with the 27 year prison sentence and hopes Halle gets the help he needs.

“I'm so sorry that Mark has literally thrown his life away and that he gets the best medical care he can get,” Alderson said.
