Man allegedly uses child as shield to avoid arrest

Vincent Cole (York County Jail)

WATERBORO (WGME) -- York County Deputies arrested a man who allegedly used a small child as a shield after refusing to comply with police orders Sunday night in Waterboro.

Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance around 7:30 p.m. involving Vincent Cole. Cole had bail conditions from an earlier arrest last month when he was accused of stabbing a bystander.

Police say Cole attempted to flee from authorities, taking sharp turns through a neighborhood and jumping out of his vehicle while it was moving. The car crashed into a nearby boulder.

Cole failed to comply with orders and advanced toward the deputy who drew his Taser.

Cole then grabbed a small child and used her as a shield. The child was retrieved by the mother and Cole was arrested.

He was charged with violation of conditional release, refusing to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, endangering the welfare of a child, and operating after suspension and failure to wear a seat belt.

Cole was denied bail and is being held at the York County Jail.
